Its all about the vibe

This is the first in a series of blogs to come that are designed to give you some practical tips on how to make a mortgage and finance broker work for you.
Just like solicitors, accountants, builders, plumbers, any profession really, there are good ones and not so good ones.
But how do you find a good one? Well a referral from someone you trust is the best way but if that’s not an option then social media or Google search is a starting point. Just be aware when using Google search that it shows paid ads first, and there can be a lot of them, which is fine except that just because a broker is on the first page of a Google search doesn’t mean they are any good.
Once you have some names the best way to sort the wheat from the chaff is to check out their website, Facebook page or Instagram. Ratings and testimonials are a good indication but looking at their content is even better. Is it relevant and informative, do you get a feel for the personality and does the content add value. Remember you deal with a person not a business or a brand so it doesn't matter how flashy and professional the website or social media page is if you can't work with the person then you're not going to get the most out of your loan experience.
Regardless of how you find one it is important to interview them. I'm not suggesting a full on interview but meet them or at the very least have a phone conversation. Ask them to talk you through their process and how they are going to add value for you. Find out what their background is and how long have they been in the industry. Take notice if they listen to you and ask questions to find out if and how they can help you. And be wary if all they want to talk about is the best interest rate. But most importantly do you feel comfortable with them? How’s the ”vibe”?
A good broker should not only help you with your current situation but be the first person you think of for future loan needs for you, your family and your friends.
